-
Can You Smell Gas?
If you smell gas, leave those checks and call the National Gas Emergency number on 0800 111 999.
-
Any of These Warning Signs?
Stop and call us if water is leaking from the boiler, if it locks out again after one reset, if you hear loud banging, if you notice a burning smell, or if you see dark sooty marks or a yellow or orange flame where it should be blue.
-
Power
Check the boiler display is lit, the switch beside the boiler is on and nothing has tripped at the consumer unit. If you have prepayment electricity or gas, check there is credit.
-
Gas Supply
Try a gas hob if you have one. If it will not light either, the problem is the gas supply rather than the boiler, so contact your gas supplier.
-
Thermostat and Timer
Turn the room thermostat up a few degrees and make sure the programmer is set to on, not off or a holiday setting.
-
Pressure Gauge
On a sealed system, a reading below 1 bar is a common reason for a boiler to stop. Your manual explains how to top it up through the filling loop.
-
Condensate Pipe
In freezing weather, check the white plastic pipe that runs outside from a condensing boiler. A frozen pipe will stop the boiler.
Vaillant's advice is to pour warm water from a watering can or jug over the frozen section, or hold a hot water bottle against it, until the ice clears, then follow your manual to restart the boiler.
Never use boiling water from a kettle, as it can crack the pipe, and take care on icy ground.
-
Reset
If your manual describes a reset, try it once. If the fault returns, leave it and call us.
-
Call the National Gas Emergency Number
A smell of gas is an emergency for the gas network, not a boiler fault. Call the National Gas Emergency number on 0800 111 999, which is free and open 24 hours a day. National Gas advises that you do not smoke or light matches, do not turn electrical switches on or off, open doors and windows, and turn off the gas at the emergency control valve, usually next to your gas meter, unless it is in a cellar.
If you suspect carbon monoxide, National Gas advises stopping and switching off all appliances, opening doors and windows, leaving the property, calling 0800 111 999 and seeking medical help straight away. Do not go back inside until you are told it is safe. Once the emergency service has made the property safe, call us and we will repair the fault.
-
Stop and Call Us
Never remove the boiler casing or try to adjust anything inside it, because work on gas appliances must by law be done by someone on the Gas Safe Register.
Gas Safe Register lists sooty staining and floppy yellow flames as warning signs of an unsafe appliance, so switch it off and leave it off until it has been checked.
-
Glad That Sorted It
Many breakdowns turn out to be something simple that you can put right in a few minutes, and when they are not, we will get an engineer to you and keep you informed.
If the boiler locks out again, the fault needs an engineer, and repeated resets will not fix it.
-
Still Not Working? Call Us
When you call, we start by asking a few questions so we understand what is happening. Often we can talk you through a check that gets the boiler going again there and then.

When to Stop and Call Us
Some faults are for a Gas Safe registered engineer only. Never remove the boiler casing or try to adjust anything inside it, because work on gas appliances must by law be done by someone on the Gas Safe Register.

Advice on the Phone While You Wait
When you call, we start by asking a few questions so we understand what is happening. Often we can talk you through a check that gets the boiler going again there and then. If not, we give you practical advice to keep you safe and, where possible, keep your hot water running until we arrive.
That might mean using an electric immersion heater if your hot water cylinder has one, or keeping a room warm while you wait. One customer told us that our advice on the phone kept their hot water working until the team could come out and fix the problem. That is exactly what we aim for on every breakdown call.
What Happens When We Arrive
Our engineer will show you a Gas Safe Register ID card and start with safety: checking for gas escapes, the flue and the condition of the boiler before testing it. We then find the fault and explain it in plain English.
You get fixed pricing for the repair before any work starts. Our vans carry common parts, so many breakdowns are put right on the first visit. If a part has to be ordered, we make the system safe, restore what we can in the meantime and return in a fixed appointment slot to finish the job. Any paperwork follows promptly.

Questions
Boiler Breakdown Questions
Are You Really Available 24/7 for Boiler Breakdowns?
Yes. You can call us day or night on 01932 640 256 or 07826 844 490. We will give you advice on the phone straight away and arrange for an engineer to come out.
What Should I Do First If My Boiler Stops?
Check the power, the gas supply, the thermostat and timer, and the pressure gauge, and in freezing weather the condensate pipe outside. If you smell gas, leave those checks and call the National Gas Emergency number on 0800 111 999.
How Do I Thaw a Frozen Condensate Pipe?
Pour warm, not boiling, water over the frozen section or hold a hot water bottle against it until it clears, then restart the boiler following your manual. Boiling water can crack the pipe. If it keeps freezing, we can insulate or reroute it.
Is It Safe to Keep Resetting My Boiler?
One reset, if your manual describes it, is fine. If the boiler locks out again, the fault needs an engineer, and repeated resets will not fix it.
Can You Keep My Hot Water Going Until the Repair?
Where possible, yes. On the phone we will talk through what your system allows, such as an immersion heater on a hot water cylinder, so you are not left without hot water while you wait.
How Is a Breakdown Different from a Boiler Repair?
A breakdown is the urgent call when the boiler has stopped. Our boiler repair service covers the full range of faults, including ones that can wait for a booked visit, such as a boiler that keeps losing pressure.
