Your Questions Answered
Most Questions Are About Boilers
Most of the questions we hear are about boilers: what to do when one stops working, whether it is time for a new one and what a service involves. We have answered those first, followed by gas safety, heating and plumbing, and booking. If your question is not here, call us or send us a message and we will help.

Boilers
What Should I Do If My Boiler Breaks Down?
First check that the boiler has power, that the pressure gauge is not reading low and, in freezing weather, that the condensate pipe outside has not frozen. If it still will not work, call us on 01932 640 256 or 07826 844 490. We are available 24/7 for boiler breakdowns and will give you advice on the phone straight away to keep you safe and, where possible, keep your hot water running until we arrive.
How Do I Know If I Need a New Boiler?
If your boiler is over ten years old, keeps breaking down, loses pressure again and again or needs parts that are no longer made, a boiler replacement is often the better value. Rising energy bills and radiators that heat unevenly can also be signs. We will give you an honest view of repair against replacement before you decide.
What Is the Difference Between a Combi, System and Conventional Boiler?
A combi boiler heats water straight from the mains when you turn on a tap, so there is no hot water cylinder. A system boiler stores hot water in a cylinder, which suits homes where more than one tap or shower is used at once. A conventional, or regular, boiler also uses a cylinder but is fed by a cold water tank in the loft, and is often found in older homes. We will recommend the type that suits your home and how you use hot water.
Which Boiler Brands Do You Install?
We are qualified to install all the major boiler brands, including combi, system and conventional boilers. We recommend the one that suits your home, your hot water use and your budget, and explain why.
My Boiler Keeps Losing Pressure. What Should I Do?
On most sealed heating systems, the pressure gauge should read between 1 and 1.5 bar when the heating is cold, but your boiler manual gives the right figure for your model. If you have to top it up often, there may be a leak on the boiler or the heating system. Call us and we will find the cause rather than just refilling it.
Why Has My Boiler Stopped Working in Freezing Weather?
Condensing boilers drain water through a plastic condensate pipe, and if the outside section freezes the boiler shuts down to protect itself. You can often clear it by pouring warm, not boiling, water along the pipe, then resetting the boiler as the manual describes. Take care, as the water can freeze on the ground. If the boiler still will not start, call us.
Does a New Boiler Need Building Regulations Approval?
Installing or replacing a boiler is notifiable building work in England. Because our engineers are Gas Safe registered, we can notify the local authority on your behalf through the Gas Safe Register, and you receive a Building Regulations compliance certificate. Keep it safe, as it is useful when you come to sell your home.
What Controls Come with a New Boiler?
Under the Boiler Plus standards in England, a new gas boiler must have time and temperature controls. A new combi boiler also needs one extra energy saving measure, such as smart controls with automation, weather compensation, load compensation or flue gas heat recovery. We will explain the options and set the controls up with you at handover.
Servicing and Safety
How Often Should My Boiler Be Serviced?
Once a year. The Health and Safety Executive advises that gas appliances are serviced and safety checked at least once every 12 months, and an annual service is usually a condition of a manufacturer's warranty. We will remind you when your next one is due.
What Is Included in a Boiler Service?
We carry out a visual inspection and safety checks, clean the key components, check the flue and ventilation, test pressures and temperatures, and check the gas rate and burner pressure. You receive a service report with any recommendations.
Can You Provide Landlord Gas Safety Certificates?
Yes. Landlords must have each gas appliance and flue checked by a Gas Safe registered engineer at least every 12 months, give existing tenants a copy of the record within 28 days and give new tenants a copy before they move in. We carry out the check, send the record promptly and can combine it with the annual boiler service.
What Should I Do If I Smell Gas?
Open doors and windows, do not turn electrical switches on or off, put out any naked flames and do not smoke. Turn off the gas at the emergency control valve if you know where it is and can reach it safely, then call the National Gas Emergency Service free on 0800 111 999, from outside if you are using a mobile. Once the emergency service has made the supply safe, we can find and repair the fault.
How Can I Check That an Engineer Is Gas Safe Registered?
Anyone who works on gas appliances in a home must be on the Gas Safe Register. Every registered engineer carries a Gas Safe ID card that shows which types of gas work they are qualified to do, so ask to see it before work starts. You can also check a business on the Gas Safe Register website.
Heating and Plumbing
Do You Repair Underfloor Heating?
Yes. We repair both wet and electric underfloor heating, from cold areas and zones that will not respond to thermostats that do not control the heat properly. We find the fault with as little disruption to your floors as possible.
Can You Add Radiators or Upgrade My Heating Controls?
Yes. We fit new radiators and valves, extend pipework for extensions, and upgrade room thermostats, programmers and smart heating controls. We can also power flush and clean an existing system so the radiators heat evenly again.
Do You Deal with Leaks and Burst Pipes?
Yes, and we are available 24/7 for urgent leaks. If water is escaping, turn it off at the internal stop tap, usually found under the kitchen sink, and call us. We will repair the leak and check the surrounding pipework.
Do You Fit Complete Bathrooms?
Yes. We fit new bathrooms and en suites from start to finish, and coordinate tiling, plastering and electrical work with trusted local trades.
